Fissure Sealants
Fissure Sealants are plastic coatings that we apply, typically on the grooves of the back teeth. The sealant creates a protective layer, keeping food and bacteria at bay.

Keep food and bacteria at bay
Hard-to-reach fissures in the back molars are prone to accumulation of food and bacteria. This can lead to decay, which in turn, can cause caries (cavities).
When should fissure sealants be applied?
Ideally, you should get fissure sealants as soon after a tooth’s eruption. With children, the use of resin-based fissure sealants is recommended as early after eruption as possible. Sealants are also applied as soon as the first permanent teeth appear. This is usually between the age of 6 and 7 years. The dentist usually seals the rest of the teeth as soon as they appear (usually between 11 and 14 years of age).
The Process
The application process is simple and takes no more than a few minutes per tooth. First, we clean the tooth thoroughly using a special solution and then dry it completely. Next, we pretty much paint over the surface of the tooth and allow it to set, before we cure it using blue light.
Sealants can last for many years. However, we would like to conduct regular checks to detect any wear-and-tear early. Over time, the sealant might require further coats or replacement.
