Endosteal Implants

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are also known as dental implants. These implants are made of titanium or a titanium alloy because the body does not reject it. Titanium is  osteophilic (bone loving) so it suits this application. The endosteal implants are substitutes for roots and are fixed to the jaw bone surgically. These are the anchors for the replacement tooth/teeth.

Replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant helps in overall health and it maintains the function of the surrounding teeth. The implant also helps prevent tooth migration, loss of facial structure and avoids loss of bone from the jaw.

The Process

You can be a right candidate for an implant if you have:

  • Missing tooth/teeth
  • A fully grown jawbone
  • Adequate bone to secure the implants
  • Healthy oral tissues
  • No health conditions that will negatively affect bone healing
  • Want to improve your speech

There are three main types of teeth stains:

The Endosteal implant surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. Once the dentist places the titanium implant in the jaw bone, a cover screw is put in. The area is closed with stitches and allowed to heal. Once it heals, the dentist removes the screw and places the temporary crown on the implant.

The tissue around the implant then grows around the final prosthetic tooth. The soft tissue may take about four months to heal and is then ready for the final prosthetic tooth. The prosthetic tooth is sometimes attached to a cylinder which is then screwed in or it can be directly cemented.

Some patients may experience swelling of gums and face, bruising of skin and gums, pain on the implant area, or minor bleeding. Your dental surgeon will prescribe pain medications or antibiotics.

Most dental implants have a success rate of 90-95%. Smoking, bruxing  can be a reasons for implant failure and complications. And if it does happen, the implants can be replaced with a second attempt. However, in extreme cases, the implant is removed, the bone is cleaned up, and you can try the procedure again in two or three months.
